The Brief Introduction of Rice Paper

Rice paper for Chinese painting and calligraphy was produced in Jing County, Anhui Province. During the Tang Dynasty, Jing County was under the official administration of Xuanzhou Prefecture. Jing paper had to be transported to Xuanzhou before it was distributed elsewhere. So the paper was named xuan paper.

How to distinguish raw xuan paper and ripe xuan paper?

 

  • The main difference between raw rice paper and ripe rice paper is its flexibility, wet dyeability, ink absorption, toughness, etc. Raw rice paper is softer than ripe paper, has a certain of diffusibility and strong ink absorption capacity.
  • If you want to distinguish between raw rice paper and ripe rice paper, you can use water to test it. Drop few water on the rice paper, If it spreads slowly around, it is raw rice paper. If it does not spread immediately or does not spread, it is ripe rice paper.
